Download materials to your computer

Download a file or folder, and check the local copy.

Written steps
  1. Download and check a PDF

Do you need to get an assignment onto your computer? Here we first download one PDF and then an entire folder. Download gives you a local copy. The file also stays in Google Drive. Open the folder with the material, and click once on the file you want to download. Click Download, the downward arrow in the toolbar above the files. Find the downloaded file in the browser’s downloads or in the Downloads folder on the computer. Open the PDF file in your PDF reader. Here the local copy is open in SumatraPDF. Check the title and content so you know you have the right assignment. A local copy does not automatically follow later changes in Drive. Download the material again if the teacher updates it. A Google document may be converted to another file format when downloaded; our PDF is downloaded as PDF.

  2. Download and unzip a folder

If you want to download several materials at once, go to the folder that contains them. Here the subfolder Materialer is in the project folder. Click once on the folder Materialer. Click Download. Drive packs the folder’s content into a ZIP file. Wait until the file has finished downloading; large folders can take longer. Open the downloaded ZIP file in Windows. Click Extract all, which means Udpak alle, in the toolbar. Then the materials become ordinary files and folders. Choose where the files should be placed. Here we use Downloaded materials under School work. Select Show extracted files when complete if you want to see the folder afterwards. Confirm with Extract. Open the extracted folder Materialer. Here the assignment description is now an ordinary local PDF file. Check the content in your PDF reader before you continue. Try it yourself: Download a harmless practice file and a folder. Find the local copies, unzip the ZIP file, and check that the material can be opened. If Download is missing, the owner or the school may have limited access. Ask for the correct access instead of getting around it.
