Keep track of new and old file versions
Upload a new PDF version, and retrieve an earlier version.
Written steps
Upload and check a new version
Have you received an updated PDF for your school assignment? You can put it in as a new version of the same file. That way you avoid several almost identical files in the project folder. You must be able to edit the file to do this. Here we are in Materials. Right-click the assignment description. Choose File information from the menu. Choose Manage versions. Here you can see the current version of the file. Click Upload new version at the top of the window. Choose the updated PDF on the computer. Here we have selected the file with updated in the name. Check the file name, and confirm with Open or Enter. Wait until the upload is finished. The new file now appears as Current version. The original is below as Version 1. It is still one file in Drive, with two versions. The new version is also downloaded and opened in SumatraPDF. Here is the change: a fifth point about a source list. Always check the content so you do not keep working with the wrong update.
Download an earlier version
You can also download an earlier version. Older versions may be cleaned up automatically. So save a local copy of an important earlier version while it still exists. Click the three dots next to Version 1, the earlier version. Choose Download. Then you download that exact earlier version to the computer. You do not change the current version in Drive. Here is the downloaded old PDF open in SumatraPDF. It has four points and no source list. Compare the contents, and give your local copy a clear name if you want to keep it. Try it yourself with a non-sensitive practice file: Upload a new version, check the change, and download the old version. The method applies to PDF files, among others. Google Docs has its own version history inside the document.
