0:00 Find a writing guide
Use a writing guide to get started on a personal letter. You must be logged in to IntoWords and have internet access. The guide opens in IntoWords Cloud in your browser.
Click the house on the Windows toolbar. It opens IntoWords Cloud. From there, you can choose a writing guide.
Collapse the Windows toolbar so it does not cover the page. You can open it again with the small IntoWords button.
Choose Writing guides. A guide gives you questions and sentence starters that help you build the text.
Choose Genre, and scroll down to the search field. The categories help you find a guide that matches the task.
Click in the search field and type personal. The guide Write a personal letter now appears.
Open the guide. First read the short explanation and advice. Here, the letter should be addressed to someone you know.
1:24 Write the letter field by field
Scroll down to the fields. Click in the first field and use Control and A to select the sample text. Replace it with place and date. Do the same in the next fields.
Write a greeting and the recipient’s name. Here I write Dear Anna instead of the sentence starters.
In the introduction, you explain why you are writing. Here, the letter is about a trip to the forest on Saturday. Use the questions above the field as help.
Expand on the experience in the order it happened. First we walked along the lake, then we ate packed lunches, and on the way home we found chestnuts.
Finish the story. Here I write that it was lovely to get outside, and I invite Anna to come along next time. Adapt the ending to your own letter.
End with a closing and your name. Remove the sentence starters so only your own ending remains.
3:03 Save and check the letter
When the letter is ready, hover over the folder button. Choose My documents. Give the file a name you will recognize. Here it is called Letter to Anna.
Choose file format. DOCX can be edited further in a word processor. Here we choose PDF so we can open and check the finished letter.
Click OK and wait for the file. Even though the choice is called My documents, the file is downloaded through the browser.
Choose Open file in the downloads list. Check the date, name, and the full letter in the saved PDF.
This is the finished letter without the guide’s questions and sentence starters. All paragraphs are included, from Dear Anna to Sofie’s closing.
4:19 Try it yourself
Try it yourself with a short experience. Fill in all fields with your own words, save the letter, and open the file again. Can the recipient understand what happened, and why you are writing?
Your PDF contains the full letter without the guide’s questions and sentence starters, and you have opened the file and checked the result.
